Brasstown Bald

At an elevation of 4,784 feet, Brasstown Bald is the highest point in Georgia.  *For some reason, I have never hiked to the top until a few weeks ago. You drive up the majority of the mountain, then walk a nice, paved 0.6 mile trail to the top. It's short, but very steep. There was a beautiful view, although somewhat cloudy. They say that on a clear day, you can see Atlanta from up there. Also, because of the elevation, they said the weather up there is more like that of Massachusetts than of Georgia.

*My mom informed me that I have hiked to the top, several times, when I was little.

All set to hike.

Chess did hike a good portion, but needed a little help from Daddy. A very strong and nice Daddy.

View from the top.

There is a little museum and video up there.

Attempted family photo.

This is at Pappy's - a little general store-type area near the mountain.

It was a very fun day trip. We have been loving getting out and hiking in this late summer/early fall weather.

Lera Walking

Lera has been walking for a little over a week now.  It is so fun to see her try and try again, wobbling like a little penguin.  She seems so tiny tottering all around.  She is a very brave girl and wants to keep up with her big sister.  So here is a video of Lera walking while she and Chess were playing outside.

Nan-Naw and Paw-Paw's House

The girls and I love going to visit Nan-Naw and Paw-Paw. They have the best back porch to play on, lots of fun toys, a play house outside, a swing set, and lots of beautiful trees for shade and swinging from.

This is the day and place Lera took her first steps! I think Chess took her first steps here, too, oddly enough.

Holding hands on the swing.

Picking peppers from Paw-Paw's plant! (How's that for alliteration?)

I'm so glad my grandparents live close and that they are very spry and fun. We love you!

Potty Central

I must say, this whole potty-training thing wasn't nearly as hard as I thought it would be. I was so scared of starting this, afraid my whole day would be filled with cleaning clothes and carpets and that we wouldn't be able to leave the house for weeks on end. Chess is 28 months old, so I thought we would wait awhile, but after reading a book called Diaper Free Before Three, I changed my mind. I totally recommend it! Very smart advise. I checked mine out at the library.

We started on Saturday of Labor Day weekend b/c I wanted Jared to be home with me and have a full three days without diapers, before I had to do it by myself with the two kids. That proved to be a good idea b/c Lera loves the bathroom a little too much, and tries to crawl or push her way in whenever we are in there. It's not so bad upstairs, where the bathrooms are bigger, but in the little half bath downstairs, it's quite frustrating.

So, Saturday morning Chess sat and sat and sat, but her diaper was wet, so I assumed she already went all she had to. We have been sitting on the potty in the mornings for awhile now, and she doesn't mind it at all. She reads books, plays with cars, and sings songs. An hour or so later, she peed in the kitchen. At least it was the kitchen!

We tried sitting on the potty a lot. Nothing. We played outside. I knew she must have to go. And she did while we were outside. At least there was no clean-up necessary! On to underwear #3 for the day. I was starting to get discouraged. More sitting. More playing. Nothing.

Before bath we sat and sat again. Then, she did it! Pee in the potty and she looked so surprised and so excited. I was so excited, too. We decided not to do any type of rewards, except showing how proud we are of her. I've read a few books on potty-training, and decided this was the way we wanted to do it. It's so cute b/c she says, "I'm so proud of myself," b/c it says that in a book we checked out from the library. I also recommend it, it's called My Big Girl Potty.

We put a diaper on for bed, b/c I'm not ready for night time bed changing. She woke up dry and the next two days she didn't have any more accidents! We had #1's and #2's in the potty. It was fabulous. She just got it. She sat on the potty a lot those two days, but she got faster and better able to control her muscles in just a few more days after that.

It has now been two weeks and she has only had one accident and a few close calls, but that was all in the first week. She has totally impressed me. We have gone potty at other people's houses and in public potties without a problem. We have gone on hikes and long car rides and she has done great. She now tells me when she has to go, and I only ask her to go a couple of times a day, especially just before leaving to go somewhere.

I know all kids are different, but I am so thankful she is doing so well. I really didn't have anything to be worried about. And I love thinking of how much money we are saving by not buying diapers for her!

Another recommendation I have is the little potties we use. We got them at Ikea, and they are one-piece, easy-to-clean and only $4 each! We bought four so they could go in all the bathrooms and one in the car.

INK

Chess and I were able to go on a field trip to the INK museum with some friends from church and their preschool kids. My mom was so kind to watch Lera, so I could really play and interact with Chess. We had such a fun time. Thank you, Momma!

Chess did a lot of things at the museum:

Shopping.

Cooking.

Weighing.

Background: The past two times Chess has gone to the doctor, she FREAKED out about standing on the scale. I'm not sure why, but it scares her to death. Once, we ended up putting her 37 lb body on the baby scale! The next time, the nurse bribed her with a sucker to get her to stand on it for two seconds. So, here at the pretend doctor's office, I told her to stand on the scale to see what she'd do. She said, "No, baby will stand on scale." And that's exactly what happened.

Fixing Momma's hair.

Grooming.

Firefighting.

Milking.

Flying.

Beautiful

Chess was watching me take Lera's 10 month pictures, and she wanted me to take some pictures of her, too. "What!?!? You WANT me to take pictures of you?!" Of course, I obliged. When I was looking at them later, I was stunned at how beautiful she looked. I always knew she was a pretty girl, but she just looks so much older and breath-taking to me (I know, I'm her mother, but still). I had fun editing them a little bit, and here they are.

10 Months Old

Poor baby wasn't feeling very good on her 10 month birthday, so I didn't get very good pictures of her.

Then again, she's always trying to slide down and crawl away, no matter if she's feeling well or not.

Chess was getting her to laugh here.

Lera is standing on her own now. I believe we may have a walker sometime later this month. She is such a fun and happy baby. I love her.
